Buying your First Home? – Need a little help?
It will always be a difficult and confusing process to purchase your first home, but in New Zealand, this is especially true. This is due to our ever-increasing house prices, high demand, and lack of supply. However, in saying that, there are options, help and support for First Home Buyers in New Zealand, which is available. Surprisingly, the information about your options is not widely advertised.
Historically, successive NZ Governments have attempted to sort our housing problems with several different strategies, yet none have really helped.
KiwiBuild 2017
The plan was to increase the supply of housing available for first home buyers – the theory behind this was that increases to supply would lead to reduced house prices. Unfortunately, it did not pan out that way. In 2017 Labour party promised an additional 100,000 homes would be built within 10 years – the target was dumped with just 258 homes reportedly built.
Help is Available
We now have an option that can make it a little easier to purchase your first home. This is known as the FIRST HOME GRANT which is effectively up to $10,000. This is available to First Home Buyers. You will need to meet a set criteria with new, more affordable homes being built with maximum price caps. To check if you qualify CLICK HERE.
The current low interest rates also help and mortgage repayments at these low rates are often cheaper than rent. It appears however, that this may soon change. In the even that rates do rise talk to a mortgage adviser to find out how to best protect yourself.
